Modified Release preparations are only available as brands in recognition of the fact that there may be differences in the bio-availabilities of the different products even though they may be the same molecule and strength. The MHRA and BNF recommend brand prescribing of these products.
In the event that the prescription for a modified release product is written generically, then the choice of the brand given to the patient is left to the community pharmacist. It is often the case that one of the most expensive versions is dispensed.
For example the cost to the prescribing budget of a generic prescription for Diclofenac 75mg bd could be as little as £7.95 per month or as much as £22.82 for 56 tablets depending on which brand is actually dispensed by the community pharmacist.
With so many products and strengths available, prescribers often find it impossible to know which dose of which brand is the most cost effective. This is why Eco Generic versions of MR products are the ideal solution to this dilemma.

The principle of reducing the cost of medicines by allowing the cost of manufacture more closely to determine the NHS price can be applied to other products which are usually written generically and whose prices are controlled by the Drug Tariff. Primary Care Trusts are aware that the acquistion cost of generics to the pharmacist is less than the reimbursement price. The use of Eco Generics means that this profit will be reduced and the money saved returns to the prescribing budget.
As Eco Generics have to be written by brand they will slightly reduce the generic rate but reduce the costs significantly and prescribers will have to decide the priority for their own practices.
This pricing principle can be applied to other products that are off patent and these could have an even greater benefit for the drugs budget. For more information on potential new product launches please e-mail us your enquiry by clicking here
